My Nintendo Game Boy And Game Boy Advance Collection
Summer Of Retro Entry #2 - Advance Wars
Advance Wars was originally released back in September 2001 as one of the first batch of games, which made it to Nintendo's Game Boy Advance.
Releasing a hardcore turn based strategy game on Nintendo's shiny, newly born must've seemed like a risky prospect. But the game received top reviews, and later spawned successors across both GBA and NDS. No wonder, as Advance Wars combines fantastic game play flawless executed by developer Intelligent Systems.
Orange Star to the Rescue
In Advance War you serve as army advisor in the country of Orange Star, which is pitted against the force of evil aggressor Blue Moon. Although packed into a small form factor - sofa strategists need not worry about simplistic game play; you'll need real thinking to succeed, as you lead your armies to victory or defeat.
Unit selection is solid encompassing land, air and sea. Computer opponents are adequate for the task. Maps are well thought out. Each has multiple venues for attack and defence, and you'll need understanding of terrain effects on combat to succeed. Army commanders come with different super powers, that ad a bit of spice and sense of urgency during play.
Advance Wars packs plenty of entertainment in the cartridge; sizable campaign, multiplayer via hot seat or link cable, additional missions can be purchased. Even a level editor is thrown in for good measure. The learning curve is perfect - you'll be lured in by the apparent ease and flow of the first handful of missions, but rest assured ... tough assignments lies in store later on, when the game really has sunk its hooks into you.
Advance Wars' simple and colourful graphics get the job done, with recognizable units and fun combat animations. Sound effects are barebones, and the trippy soundtrack tends to grate after multiply hours.
Forward March!
Above all - Advance Wars is fun. It'll grab your attention and keep you engrossed for hours without end. Strategy fans need to get this game pack back in their handhelds without delay - action addicts need not apply.
Verdict: Get it!
------------
Verdict guide:
