A Few Of The Best And Unforgettable Video Game Songs
Video games without their title music are similar to cereals without milk, a television without a remote, an expensive car with no radio (I will stop now). The idea is, music in game titles may not be the tail which wags the dog, but they are probably as esential. They set the tone for the game play, get us directly into the action, and as the list below points out, they are inevitably one of the main things we remember regarding our particular video game experiences.
These are the best, most memorable tracks as well as scores from my personal favorite game titles. Prepare yourselves, we are going to get nostalgic.
Tetris
This was during the golden age of handhelds and where a color Game Boy wasthe result of a paint accident, not a response to the GameGear. Just hearing this tune gives me the chills. One, as it is very specific and recognizable. Two, I always used to play Tetris before going the dentist, which gave me chills for a whole, another reason.
Super Mario Bros.
Here is one more music that will teleport you back to your younger years. As soon as this track came on, it was as if I was back in my old basement, with nothing but a tiny NES controller and a box of dunkaroos. They just don’t come up with them just like they used to (video game titles that is, dunkaroos I think are still around). This tune has been remixed more times than Cher, yet stay true to the original, and you would recall the reason why this theme song is among the all-time best.
Sonic The Hedgehog
I played this one almost entirely on the GameGear. Sure it was somewhat heavy, yet the way that music pumped through those speakers like lightning through a bottle made me feel as if I owned the whole world in my palms. This video game single-handedly got me through summer outings to Hilton Head and back (it is quite hard traveling in a car full of sisters). Just remember going up against Dr.Robotnik? Play the above game title and it would be impossible to forget.
Gran Turismo
Here is the video game that broke in my Playstation. The game play was stunning, and to this very day helps it be one of, if not the, greatest driving game titles ever created. That being said, I am uncertain if I have ever seen this intro video from start to finish and as cinematic and marvelous as it is, I often just skipped my way to the game itself. Check it out above, and make you have an old copy of the game handy because you are going to immediately want to play it.
Metal Gear Solid
Quite possibly my favorite game of all time, this game had every little thing: storyline, characters, magnificent game play (though I disliked going all the way back to the armory in order to get the PSG-1 and then finally knowing exactly what Diazepam was for).
While this might be a bit of a stretch as a song, just hearing this alert sends shivers down my spine. For those of you who remember the video game, it was used once you had been spotted and were on the enemy’s radar, even though I cannot quite remember it lasting this long (unless you were dead). Nonetheless, it really is one of the most iconic scores in game titles, and was a staple of one of gaming’s most successful franchises.
Star Fox
Possibly one of the most prominent game title songs of all-time. Combine this tune with impressive game play that was before its time and you've got one of the best tandems to ever hit the SNES. It really is sort of a mystery that no flying game to this day was able to counter what Star Fox created (yes, I'm thinking of you Ace Combat/Top Gun). I previously saw this on the 64 and then it was out of my life forever but Corneria still lives on.
Tony Hawk Pro Skater
You want to talk about getting mileage out of a game title and I devoted an entire summer sucking every single point out of THPS and after that going back and doing it all over again. It was one of the first video games I remember playing that had songs you will in fact hear on the radio.
The very first version included performers such as Dead Kennedys as well as Goldfinger. By the time the game hit number 4, it had the likes of AC/DC, System Of A Down, and Run DMC on the playlist.
Today, it is common to have mainstream artists play a substantial part in the creation of a game title soundtrack, but Tony Hawk was among the first that put apparently just as much interest into its soundtrack as it did the video game itself.
Halo
The game that took over university campuses and reinvented exactly what the term multiplayer suggested (8-on-8, are you joking me?). It likewise made capture the flag, what was the most common outdoor activity among children, almost solely an indoor game.
The music is really good it sounds like something from a movie. Halo practically was its own motion picture when you look back and think about it, so that makes sense.
Mortal Kombat
This track used to wake me up for school on Mondays. That is how powerful Techno Syndrome was. Needless to say, the Jace Hall music video takes it one step even further, opening up the future of Mortal Kombat and taking video game music videos to a new aspect.
But that's the nice thing about the song, it is spun new edition after new edition. The above is my favorite remix and well, right until the newest one releases tomorrow.
On a last word, I am aware that this list is omitting most likely 500 other song titles which could easily have made the list. Therefore, I suggest to you to add yours below and shout profanities at me on how I can possibly leave it out.
Just to cover my bases, as well as to show a very awesome video that a few of you might not have seen, I suggest to you to have a look at this video below.
The Jace Hall Show is an online reality show that covers video game news and personalities as well as interviews with film/tv/sports celebrities. It also has articles that features video game songs and top songs in video games.
