Handheld Hots Up As Sony Announces NGP
Sony Computer Entertainment have a problem with leaks. We knew about the PS3 slim way before its release, we knew about the PSP Go and we knew about the just announced next generation portable too. In fact Sony, we know about your Playstation phone too, so you may want to stop pretending it doesn't exist. Regardless, the recent "Playstation Meeting" exposed the long acknowledged PSP2 console on the 27thof January. The new PSP (the device is codenamed NGP, but no official name has been announced yet) has a good chance of making it into the hand-luggage of any embarking on 2011 Australia holidays. But the handheld market is perhaps over crowded: it's not longer only Nintendo with which Sony must lock horns, but the smartphone gaming market too.
The smartphone threat is being taken seriously by both portable console companies. The NGP is a classic Sony approach, simply more brash and ballsy than any other device on the market. Its screen isn't 3D, but it's twice the size of other high-quality OLED displays on the market. This screen is touch operated as most devices these days, but there is an additional touch pad on the rear of the device. Control is an important divider between portable devices and smartphones at the moment. Smartphones are both blessed and cursed by relying on touchscreens alone: complex games are very difficult to execute, but their simplicity attracts people that will likely be scared off by the NGP's many buttons. Still, when you want a 'proper' gaming experience whilst on a Cruise Australia , the handhelds are your only real option. Whilst fun, many mobile phone games quickly become tiring.
One even playing field exists: these high powered devices are powered by batteries that, whilst constantly improving, cannot keep up with the kinds of hardware they're being put into. Those on Australia tours will want to take at least one space battery, as you'll need to recharge the current range of gaming devices at least every five hours (in the best case scenario). Many are biding their time for a more efficient iteration, especially as all the main competitors are putting up their launch prices quite significantly.
