Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Review
Published By: Square Enix, Developed By: Eidos Montreal / Nixxes Software, Genre: Sci-fi action adventure, Release Date: Aug 23, 2011, Rating: Mature, Platforms: PC, Playstation, Xbox 360.
The year is 2027 (twenty-five years before the first game). You are protagonist Adam Jensen ex SWAT commander of the Detroit Police Department now top security man for David Sarif of Sarif Industries (a mega corporation who manufactures Augmentations). Augmentations are cyber enhanced bodyparts that are causing much political and social debate throughout the world. The story of Deus Ex: HR starts off simple. Sarif Industries is attacked at the beginning of the game by terrorists. Jensen tries to save his GF top scientist Megan Reed but is almost killed by Jaron Namir (a cybernetically enhanced Merc).
After being thrown out of the window and almost dead, Sarif Industries without Jensen's say fully Augemented Adam Jensen which ultimately saves his life. Six months later Jensen goes back to Sarif Industries with questions. Why was Sarif Industries attacked? Who killed his GF Megan Reed? She was on the verge of presenting a huge Augmentation discovery in DC? The story starts out slow but picks up through gameplay, voiced dialog and really good CGI cutscenes.
The game design itself is great. Many games these days say they incorporate choice and some actually do it. Deus Ex: Human Revolution actually does it. You can play this game how you want. Do you like first person shooters? You can play the game as a cover fps. Do you like sneaking past guards exploring areas and hacking your way inside places? You can play the entire game exactly like that its your choice. Deus Ex: Human Revolution also has a real dialog tree that involves choices when talking to NPCs. Story missions and side missions can drastically change and in many cases you can see the effects of your choices play out later in the game.
Navigating menus wasen't a problem. If you have a problem finding your way around the world of Deus Ex: HR you can go to Options-> Gameplay-> and choose Highlight Object. When you chose that option a gold outline appears over air ducts, ladders, sewers, doors, security terminals and much more. I personally use the gold highlights on four different occasions. You can turn it on or off any time.
The most underwhelming part about Deus Ex: Human Revolution hands down was the Boss fights. You fight the three main Mercs who almost killed you in the beginning of the game. They all go by animal references such as The Bear, The Mantis and The Snake. The entire game up until you fought the bosses was about choice and exploring your options. That is until you have to fight these extremely linear boss fights that seemed pigeon holed into the game.
The sum of its parts (graphics) creates a beautiful atmospheric cyber punk world. The animations and graphics in cutscenes are sub par. Deus Ex: HR isn't the most jaw dropping game that released this year by a long a shot. The developers learned how to create a deep world with detail however. What i mean by that is the little things like people standing outside smoking cigarettes and chatting. A janitor doing his rounds with the radio on. The Final Fantasy XXVII poster on Frank Pritchard's wall.
Every city you visit has a unique detailed environment down to the neon signs on buildings. Some weapons have nice effects and the weapon models all looked fairly decent. This game is all about atmosphere and art style not textures. I have yet to play a game that gave me such a "Blade Runneresque" feeling. I never got tired of looking around and exploring areas often times finding a beautiful vista either in daytime or at night was breathtaking.
The sound design in Deus Ex is top notch. Everywhere you walked you can hear so many different sounds around you creating a real immersive atmosphere. The voiced dialog and scripts were well written. The music was good as well.
The gameplay begins and ends with augmenting Jensen. Augments are Jensen's cyber bodyparts. You can upgrade his augments by a few means. One being XP which you earn by practically doing anything. Some ways to get XP are hacking terminals, talking to NPC's, completing story or side missions, exploring and much more. You can also upgrade your augments by finding speical kits called Praxis Kits which allows you to upgrade a specific augment right away. Understand that this is a RPG component of Deus Ex: HR. It takes hours sometimes to get enough XP to do a few augmentation upgrades.
The augments are designed to help you further your chances of successfully playing your style. Say you want to shoot your way to glory. You can upgrade your skin and arm augments to grant you armor (for defense) and strength upgrades for less recoil while shooting and aiming. If you want to sneak and be stealthy spend your hard earned XP or buy a Praxis Kit for Cloaking augments. If you want to hack all day there are many hacking "Cranium" augments to choose from. Before you know it you will be hacking security hubs and turning robots and turrets against the enemy from inside their own bases. I did it and it was extremely fun. So as you can see upgrading Jensen's augments through XP and Praxis Kits is very important.
For shooter guys and gals you can do that in Deus Ex: Human Revoltution lethally or non lethally. Some of the guns i used were Machine Pistol, Revolver, Rocket Launcher, Crossbow, Plasma Rifle, Laser gun, P.E.P.S., Heavy Rifle, Sniper Rifle and Combat Rifle. I know i missed a few of the "Tranq" guns that are available for non lethal gameplay. There are also Mine Templates where you can combine a gas or frag grenade and create a custom mine if you choose.
You can upgrade almost every weapon in the game. Some of the upgrades for weapons are Silencers, Reload Speed, Laser Targeting, Damage Increase, Ammo Increase, Target Landing System, Burst Round, Explosive Round and Armor Piercing System. I know i probably missed a few. Upgrades can be found through exploration or bought from merchants in cities. When you have a "upgrade" combine it with the appropriate gun and you're good. You can make Jensen much more lethal with the proper augments also.
Exploration is a big part of Deus Ex: HR. Finding ways in through air ducts, sewers and rooftops rewards you with XP. I personally enjoyed picking up and moving boxes or garbage cans around to reach an unattainable area or find a air duct tucked away. The Side Quests are really good and further explores the story of the game. Whether its helping a grieving mother find answers or helping an old cop buddy track down a psychotic "aniti aug" activist. The side missions were enthralling and satisfying to complete.
No Multiplayer, no online competitive matches. It doesn't need any of that imo. The game itself lasts twenty hours. You will be rewarded for playing through the story campaign in different ways. Collectibles are scattered throughout various cities including newspapers, E-books and you can read emails by hacking hundreds of computers. There are awesome Easter Eggs like the "Anonymous X"/ "# Chan" guy you meet in a side mission. You can put many hours into Deus Ex: Human Revolution pretty easily.
Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a masterpiece with a few flaws in presentation. The boss fights and lackluster AI hurt it. With that said i have not played a sci-fi cyber punk themed game this great this gen. Mark this game as a possible GOTY winner as it is the best game i have played so far this year. Thanks for reading people.
